Scope of Service
What the Service Covers
Each scope is defined at the start, from a single building frame to a full package of primary, secondary and miscellaneous steel.
01
Structural Steel Detailing
Primary steel for commercial, industrial and infrastructure structures: columns, beams, bracing, trusses, portal frames, floor framing and roof steel, detailed from the design drawings into erection, assembly and part drawings.
02
Miscellaneous Steel Detailing
Stairs, handrails, ladders, platforms, walkways, grating layouts, canopies, lintels and pipe or equipment supports, coordinated with the primary steel and the architectural interfaces.
03
3D Modeling & BIM
Tekla Structures models with agreed phasing, numbering and assembly logic. IFC exports support coordination with architectural, MEP and plant models, and model reviews help identify clashes before fabrication.
04
Connection Detailing
Shear and moment connections, end plates, splices, base plates and bracing gussets, detailed to the design forces and connection criteria issued by the Engineer of Record. Where connection design is delegated, calculations are prepared by licensed engineering partners.
05
PEB Detailing
Pre-engineered building packages, including main frames, purlins and girts, bracing, cladding layouts and anchor bolt plans, detailed to the approved PEB design and the manufacturer’s standard details.
06
CNC & Fabrication Deliverables
DSTV NC files for drilling and cutting, DXF files for plate profiling, assembly and single-part drawings, MTO/BOM, bolt lists and weight reports, prepared in the formats your fabricator works with.
07
Technical Coordination
RFI logs, model reviews, submission tracking, comment incorporation, revision control and issue registers, coordinated with the design team, fabricator and erector through a single point of contact.
Deliverables
Typical Deliverables
The final list depends on the scope and the fabricator’s requirements. A typical detailing package includes:
| Deliverable | Content | Format |
|---|---|---|
| 3D model | Members, plates, bolts and welds with assembly and part numbering | Native model, IFC |
| General arrangement drawings | Plans, elevations and sections with erection marks and key levels | PDF, DWG |
| Anchor bolt and embed plans | Setting-out of anchor bolts and embedded items with sizes and projections | PDF, DWG |
| Assembly drawings | Fabrication drawings for each assembly with welds, holes and dimensions | |
| Single-part drawings | Plate and profile details for cutting, drilling and bending | PDF, DXF |
| Material take-off / BOM | Quantities by profile, grade and length, with weights and bolt lists | XLSX, CSV |
| NC files | Cutting and drilling data for CNC machines | DSTV (NC1) |
| Submission and revision register | Drawing status, approvals and revision history | XLSX, PDF |
Software and licensing. 3D modelling is carried out in Tekla Structures, and 2D drafting and DWG/DXF deliverables are prepared in AutoCAD. Detailing partners engaged on SteelBrio projects are required to use properly licensed software, and file formats and versions are agreed with the client and fabricator at the start of each project.
Workflow
From Design Drawings to Issued for Fabrication
Every package follows a controlled sequence, with a check before anything leaves the team.
01
Input Review
Design drawings, specifications and connection criteria are reviewed and missing information is logged as RFIs.
02
Modelling
The model is built with agreed phasing, numbering and connection types, and coordinated with other disciplines.
03
Checking
Drawings and reports are checked against the design drawings and the agreed checklist before submission.
04
Approval Cycle
Drawings are submitted for approval, and comments are incorporated and tracked until approval is received.
05
Issue & Revisions
Drawings that have reached the required approval status, for example Approved for Construction (AFC), are released with their NC files as Issued for Fabrication (IFF) under the project’s document-control procedure, and later changes are controlled by revision.
What We Need From You
- Design drawings and structural specification
- Design forces or connection design criteria
- Architectural grids, levels and interfaces
- Coating, fire protection and galvanising requirements
- Fabricator preferences: bolt types, standard connections, NC format
- Programme and required submission dates
Quality Checks
- Model checks for clashes, numbering and duplicate parts
- Drawing check against the latest design revision
- Consistent grades, bolt specifications and weld symbols
- Open RFIs flagged on every submission
- Revision clouds and registers on every reissue
- Final MTO reconciled with the model before release
Responsibilities
Detailing Is Not Structural Design
Detailing turns an approved design into fabrication information. The structural design and its approval remain with the Engineer of Record.
